In billiards, the most important piece of equipment you have is your cue’s tip. While the cue plays an extremely vital role, the tip is what contacts the cue ball and forces the reaction. There are two types of tips to choose from, both having benefits and drawbacks. It is a personal choice as to what type of tip you choose to shoot your game.
Billiards cues must have a solid, well cared for tip to be effective. Tips are made of leather, but it is how they are made that affects their level of play. It also has to do with the type of leather used in their construction. Several different leathers are often used. They include: 
- Pigskin
- Buffalo
- Cowhide
- Water buffalo
- Boar
Each type of leather provides a different level of reaction in a finished billiards tip.
A traditional leather tip is made from a matrix of bits of leather and glue that are molded and compressed to form a soft, resilient tip. The more pressure used in pressing them into the mold, the harder the tip produced will be. Softer tips do not last as long as hard tips, and will often take more maintenance to keep them in shape. Softer tips are easier to shape and scuff, but this can lead to frequent replacement. Choosing the right tip for your billiards cue (billiards cues) will depend on your shooting style and how much English you normally try to use.
The laminate tip is produced by layering several, extremely thin sheets of leather with a light layer of glue between each one. When the desired thickness has been achieved, the tips are cut with a press to produce hundreds of tips at one time. Depending on the number of layers and how tightly they are pressed together will determine how hard or soft this type of tip will be. Because they are made with sheets of leather instead of small bits, these types of tips will last much longer than the traditional style. They will also cost more.
